SummerSlam is going to be the first WWE show I watched since Elimination Chamber earlier this year. Not just pay per view. I have not watched anything WWE since that show. I was just going to buy The Royal Rumble but I was asked to do a podcast type deal so I bought Elimination Chamber as well. There was nothing for me to be excited about when it came to WWE.
Well that is before Bryan Danielson came along to save the day! He came out and called John Cena a parody of wrestling. "The American Dragon" said that this was a battle between a "sports entertainer" or rather superstar and a pro wrestler.
Some are seeing this as just a stab at John Cena. Well on the face of it I can see why you'd think that. But to know the full truth you'll have to dig deeper then that.

Unless you were living under a rock you'll know before signing with WWE Bryan Danielson was famous for being the top wrestler in Ring of Honor. He was done many tours for the largest promotion in Japan, New Japan Pro Wrestling. Danielson was known for his great bouts. When I began watching Ring of Honor back in 2007 he was my favorite wrestler there and ever since then I always looked forward to what he was going to do.
WWE tried to sign for some time be he always held off. It seemed he wanted to make a name for himself before going to WWE or perhaps he wanted to have a great amount of experience before joining the biggest promotion of them all.
If you remember the first season of NXT Bryan Danielson was treated like a joke despite his great match with Chris Jericho on the very first episode.
If you listened to The Art of Wrestling podcast with Danielson you'll learn he was annoyed with trying to get over with WWE fans. It seemed everywhere else all you needed to be was a great in ring performer and you'll go far. In WWE it's different. You need a cool entrance. Some kind of catchphrase. Something else to make them remember you. An awesome match? That's not what was going to win them over.
While Bryan Danielson ruled the world of pro wrestling he was struggling in the world of sports entertainment.
And that's what made the promo so awesome and got me so hyped up. It's like Bryan Danielson is laying out his real frustrations on John Cena. While in character he's attacking John Cena in real life its a stab at sports entertainment as a whole. John Cena is the WWE superstar and Bryan Danielson is the pro wrestler.
This is the first time anyone has done this with Cena. While opponents before may have said they were better then them non of them never said John Cena wasn't a pro wrestler or was a parody of wrestling. Add in the fact that it's IWC sweetheart Bryan Danielson saying it add much more!
What happens tonight? I don't know. But this has gotten me excited to the point that I'm watching WWE again. And WWE has Bryan Danielson, pro wrestler, to thank for that.
